In a recent piece by CFO Dive, insights from BeSmartee CFO Mina Samaan, a member of The CFO Alliance, shed light on the evolving role of AI in the budget season. Samaan revealed that despite AI's promise of efficiency, it prompted his company to kick off budget planning significantly earlier than usual this year. The proliferation of AI tools over the past six to nine months led to an "AI frenzy," necessitating a thorough review of expenditures and their impact on financial projections.

Samaan emphasized that while AI introduces complexities, it also dramatically enhances capabilities. Historically, a company might develop one or two new features; with AI, that number could jump to four or five, fundamentally altering budgeting assumptions and accelerating product development cycles.

Cautious Adoption and Validation

Despite the exciting potential, Samaan maintains a conservative stance on AI adoption within his finance team. He advises his team to view AI as a "junior accountant or a junior finance analyst," stressing the need to "triple check it and modify it" rather than blindly trusting its output. This approach underscores a critical need for human oversight and validation in AI-driven processes.

His team is currently utilizing Anthropic's Claude AI plugin to assist with budget development in Excel, focusing on data capturing, validation, and trend analysis. Samaan highlights AI's ability to perform complex trend analyses, such as identifying top 10 customers or conducting margin analyses, in hours rather than days. This allows analysts to transition from manual formula creation to validating AI-generated insights, optimizing their time and focus. Samaan also monitors AI tool costs closely, reflecting a pragmatic, startup-aligned financial discipline.
