CFOs One Month Into 2026: Execution, Not Strategy, Will Decide the Year

New CFO Alliance report reveals how finance leaders are prioritizing growth, margin discipline, and focus amid rising pressure

Berwyn, PA – One month into 2026, CFOs have moved past debating scenarios and are actively managing tradeoffs. According to the newly released 2026 Global Mid-Market CFO Sentiment Report from CFO Alliance, finance leaders entered the year confident in liquidity and growth prospects, but facing immediate margin pressure, constrained execution capacity, and heightened sensitivity to U.S. economic conditions.

Based on insights from more than 230 CFOs and senior finance leaders, the report shows a clear shift in mindset. CFOs are narrowing priorities, sequencing initiatives more deliberately, and placing less emphasis on speculative bets and more on disciplined execution.

“CFOs are not short on ideas or tools in 2026,” said Nick Araco, Jr., CEO of CFO Alliance. “What they are short on is execution capacity. One month in, it is already clear that performance this year will be defined by focus, tradeoffs, and follow-through, not by ambition or macro predictions.”

What CFOs Are Thinking One Month Into 2026

The report highlights several defining early-year realities:

  • Revenue optimism is real, but margin pressure is immediate. While over two-thirds of CFOs expect at least 5 percent revenue growth, customer pricing pressure and labor costs are already compressing margins.

  • Risk feels local, not abstract. Nearly 70 percent of CFOs say company performance is closely tied to the U.S. economy, with tariffs, regulatory changes, and competitive pressure outranking interest rates as top external concerns.

  • AI interest remains, but skepticism is high. Only 12.5 percent of CFOs report high confidence that AI will deliver measurable ROI in 2026, reflecting a strong bias toward sequencing and proof of value.

  • Execution is breaking down around focus, not technology. Prioritization, shared accountability, and capacity constraints far outweigh technology or AI limitations as execution blockers.

“Too many initiatives kill progress,” said Ranga Bodla, Vice President, Field Engagement and Marketing at Oracle NetSuite. “CFOs are signaling that 2026 is about choosing the few outcomes that truly matter and executing them well. Technology plays a role, but only when it supports clarity and decision velocity.”

What CFOs Should Prioritize in 2026

According to the report, CFO priorities for the year ahead are increasingly pragmatic:

  • Protect margins while pursuing growth. Growth without pricing discipline is no longer viewed as success.

  • Fix processes before scaling technology or AI. CFOs are focused on improving current workflows before adding systems or automation.

  • Actively manage execution capacity. Sequencing, ownership, and accountability are becoming core finance leadership responsibilities.

  • Leverage peer insight to make better tradeoffs. Nearly 40 percent of CFOs say they want more perspective from peers to navigate complexity faster.

“The CFO role in 2026 is less about forecasting outcomes and more about architecting execution,” Araco added. “The CFOs who win this year will be the ones who narrow the field, align the organization, and turn strategy into results.”
